Nazaré's northern beach is sought after by the bravest and most fearless who seek giant waves. Nazaré is a popular surfing destination due to the incredibly high waves formed by the presence of the Nazaré Canyon underwater. Due to constructive interference generated by the canyon between incoming swells, wave heights become even greater along this stretch of coastline. Due to the height of the waves, many surfing records have been set in Nazaré.

Until 2013, Carcavelos (a civil parish in the municipality of Cascais, Portugal, located about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) west of Lisbon) was known for its Carcavelos wine. In 2013, the parish was merged into the new parish of Carcavelos e Parede.
