Introduction

The Petit Trianon Palace, the Queen's Farm and the Queen's Garden, were opened in 2006 and fully showcase the private life of Marie Antoinette. The Queen, wife of Louis XVI, loved a simple country life away from the lavish atmosphere of Versailles. The Petit Trianon Palace and its park are closely tied to the memory of Marie Antoinette, as she is the only queen to leave a personal mark in Versailles. She mocked the old court and its traditions, insisting on the lifestyle she desired. In 1774, Louis XVI presented her with the Petit Trianon Palace and its land, which became her refuge from etiquette and rules. People can only enter here by invitation from Marie Antoinette. In 2008, the palace gardens were reopened after restoration, becoming a unique preservation area centered around the Petit Trianon Palace. The layout here is filled with Marie Antoinette's wide-ranging interests and refined tastes, showcasing her freedom of thought and the influence of Enlightenment ideas. Since 2007, visitors have been able to enter the gardens through the Swiss Cottage entrance, with permission from the gatekeeper, on the condition that the queen is not present.
