Introduction

The Holy Virgin Monastery, also known as Pokrovsky Monastery, is a historic convent. It was founded in 1364 by Dmitry Konstantinovich of Suzdal. The current architectural appearance of the monastery was built in the 16th century. It was one of the largest monasteries in the Russian Orthodox territories between the 16th and 17th centuries. In history, the monastery was also used as a place of confinement for Russian queens. Ivan III's first wife, who was neglected due to infertility, was sent here to spend the rest of her life. Afterwards, Tsar Ivan IV and others also confined their fallen out-of-favor wives here, including Peter the Great's first wife, Evdokia Lopukhina, who was imprisoned here for 19 years. Some famous nuns spent their lives in the monastery and were eventually buried in the cathedral's burial chamber. Today, the monastery has been converted into a museum, but in recent years it has been returned to the church.

In the past 300 years, the city has undergone several name changes, from Leningrad to Petrograd, and now Saint Petersburg. Its fate has also been tumultuous, including experiencing the White Terror, enduring a 900-day siege, and witnessing the heroic defense during the Great Patriotic War. Its brilliance has never been overshadowed by gunfire or bloodshed. After protection and reconstruction, it remains "open, inclusive, and romantic"
