Introduction

The Aachen City Hall and Coronation Hall have a history tracing back to the 14th century. The buildings were constructed on the foundations of the Carolingian Palace. Inside the City Hall, there are five frescoes depicting the legendary life of Charlemagne and important historical events. These artworks are masterpieces by Aachen artist Alfred Rethel from the 19th century. The City Hall also houses replicas of symbols of imperial power, such as the cross golden ball, sword, and crown, as well as a manuscript from the Carolingian era. The hall has hosted 38 royal coronation ceremonies, and the historical artifacts and exhibits provide visitors with a vivid impression of this historical period. Furthermore, since 1949, Aachen has been annually awarding the International Charlemagne Prize here, recognizing individuals or institutions that have made contributions to European mutual understanding.
