Introduction

Since the end of the 19th century, Alexanderplatz has been the commercial center of Berlin. It has maintained its prominent status through the GDR era and the post-Cold War era. It is surrounded by modern Berlin's old town and the political center of East Germany. Today, there are both traditional and newly built department stores and stalls surrounding the square, making it lively. The square features a world clock that cleverly displays the time in different parts of the world simultaneously. The most iconic landmark is the Berlin TV Tower, built in 1969, towering at 368 meters and offering observation decks and a revolving restaurant. Behind the TV tower is the redbrick structure of St. Mary's Church, which dates back to 1270 and is the second oldest church in Berlin. In the central garden next to the church is the Neptune Fountain, and on the other side of the garden is the Red City Hall. Since its completion in 1869, the Red City Hall has served as the seat of the Berlin city government and is admired for its beautiful new Renaissance-style architecture. To the west of the Red City Hall is Berlin's oldest Nikolaiviertel, where the oldest Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas' Church) is located. In the garden along the Spree River, there are also bronze statues of Marx and Engels. Across the garden is the DDR Museum, which is worth visiting if you are interested in the everyday life of history. The famous Galeria Kaufhof department store and ALEXA shopping center are also located on the square, surrounded by many unique shops.
