Introduction

During the Qing Dynasty, one remarkable feature of coastal defense was the construction of fortresses. As early as the Song Dynasty, China had started using cannons. After the Opium War, the Qing government hired Westerners to oversee the construction of fortresses in Taiwan. The Qihou Battery in Kaohsiung was the first fortress in modern Taiwanese history to blend Western and traditional Chinese architectural forms, marking the beginning of incorporating Western technologies.
