Introduction

The Hu Shih Memorial Hall, located in Academia Sinica, is worth a visit. This building used to be the former residence of Hu Shih, the former president of Academia Sinica. After his death in 1962, it was turned into a memorial hall. The residence has preserved the original appearance and furnishings of Hu Shih's lifetime, reflecting his pragmatic philosophy. The memorial hall exhibits Hu Shih's works, manuscripts, photographs, personal items, and memorabilia, as well as interviews with him in Taiwanese documentaries. The Hu Shih Park is located outside the main gate of Academia Sinica, where Hu Shih and his wife rest, along with the tomb of their eldest son, Hu Zuowang, and a monument to commemorate their second son, Hu Sizhu, who died by suicide during the 1957 Anti-Rightist Movement. The memorial hall regularly holds touring exhibitions and events introducing Hu Shih's writings, and staff are available to provide information about Hu Shih. The memorial hall consists of the former residence, exhibition rooms, and the cemetery. The exhibition rooms, gifted by an American friend, showcase Hu Shih's emotional world, academic and cultural achievements, his relationship with modern China and Lei Zhen, as well as his personal items, manuscripts, and correspondence. The cemetery is located on the other side of the research institute, facing the former residence.
