Introduction

Church known as the Church of the Dormition, located on Mount Zion. According to the Eastern Orthodox faith, it is believed to be the resting place of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. In 1898, German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II purchased the land from Sultan Abdul Hamid II for 12,000 German gold marks, and this magnificent church was built in 1910. Today, the church is managed by the German Benedictine order.
