Introduction

Ryuho-den is a spiritual temple that enshrines the spirit of Date Masamune, the lord of Sendai. On July 10, 1945, during the final stages of World War II, Sendai City was subjected to a strategic bombing by the US Air Force, destroying Ryuho-den. The nearby Gansen-den and Zempuku-ji, which enshrine the second lord of the fief, Tadachika, and the third lord of the fief, Tsunamoto, respectively, were also destroyed. Before the reconstruction of Ryuho-den in 1979, an excavation survey was conducted in the local area, which revealed the remains of Date Masamune and items buried with him.
