Introduction

Bernini was an outstanding master of Baroque architecture. His work, the bronze baldachin, stands under the dome of the cathedral, just above the Pope's altar. The baldachin is only over 20 meters high, but its unique design and intricate decoration make it appear magnificent and solemn beneath the 140-meter dome. The four spiraling columns that support the bronze baldachin are also its unique feature.
