Introduction

St. Mary's Church is a Roman Catholic church named after the Virgin Mary and located in Trg Slobode Square in Novi Sad. It is the largest church in Novi Sad and the highest church in the Bačka region. Locals often refer to it as the "Big Church," even though it is in the Subotica Diocese. The original church was built in 1719 and was rebuilt after being destroyed in 1742. During the 1848 Hungarian Revolution, the church was again damaged and partially repaired. In 1891, the city council decided to demolish the old church and build a new one on the same site. Hungarian architect György Molnár, who provided his design services for free, designed the new church in 1892. The main building was completed in 1893, and the 72-meter-high bell tower with a gold cross was completed in 1894. Today's St. Mary's Church is the third building and has three aisles with Neo-Gothic arches. It has four altars, colored glass windows, and roof tiles.
