Introduction

Užupis is an area located in the eastern part of the old city, named after the Vilnia River that runs through the east side of the old city. In the early days, it was a gathering place for hippies, similar to other areas in Europe. However, it gained fame in 1998 when it declared itself "independent", even creating its own constitution and military. However, this declaration had no political significance and was more of a performance art. The Lithuanian government even welcomed the independence of Užupis. The area attracts artists, cultural figures, and vagabonds with its free-spirited atmosphere. Visitors can walk from the Town Hall Square to Užupio street and visit the most famous sights in the area. On the Užupis Bridge at Užupio g. 2, tourists can see the border of the other side and a sign marking the republic's name. Walking east to the intersection of Malūnų g. is the center of the entire area. A bronze statue of the Užupis angel stands in the square, symbolizing the guardian angel of the "republic". Enter Paupio g. on the other side of the intersection and you will see the famous Constitution of the other side, which expresses the freedom symbol with various languages. Each of the constitutions here expresses an incomparable charm, such as "everyone has the right not to touch or remain anonymous."
