Explore the old buildings in Helsinki

Compared to other European cities, Helsinki is a young city with a history of only over 450 years, but it has developed its own unique architectural style that combines traditional Nordic romanticism with modern trends.

Central Train Station

You won't miss the Helsinki Central Railway Station, which is an important representative masterpiece of the national romantic style. Designed by the master Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1919, the station is mainly paved with Finnish granite and is characterized by its clock tower and two pairs of statues holding globe lamps. The globe lamps on both sides of the main entrance are lit up at night. The station serves approximately 200,000 passengers daily and is the most visited building in Finland.
Not far from the Central Railway Station and the Finnish National Theatre is the Finnish National Museum. The museum was designed by Armas Lindgren, Herman Gesellius, and Eliel Saarinen. There is a unique stone-carved bear at the entrance as a distinctive symbol.
Katajanokka, Kruunuhaka, and Eira are representative districts of Art Nouveau architecture. If you like this architectural style, you can take a stroll there. Local chimney sweep Isto Rantanen is an expert in Helsinki's Art Nouveau architecture. Despite spending over 30 years on the rooftops of Helsinki's buildings, he is still deeply moved by the old architecture.
