Introduction

The Petra ancient city was built in the 6th century BC, with most buildings carved into the rock, surrounded by cliffs. There is a narrow canyon passage about 1.5 kilometers long, called the "Siq", which is the only entrance to the ancient city. The widest part of the canyon is about 7 meters, and the narrowest part is only 2 meters. The ancient city itself is famous for its reddish-brown sandstone mountains. The core of the ancient city is a large square, with the magnificent Khasneh Temple carved into a steep boulder in front of the square. The temple entrance has Roman columns, with a Madonna statue and murals inside. In addition, there is a Roman open-air theater that can accommodate more than two thousand people, with both the stage and seats carved from rocks. There are also many buildings such as temples, houses, baths, and tombs in the city, most of which are carved out of mountains.
