Introduction

In Singapore, Sri Thandayuthapani Temple is one of the most important places for Hindu worshippers. Built in 1859 and reconstructed in 1983, this temple, styled in South Indian architecture, is unique for its 48 stained glass panels on the roof that allow light to shine in from all angles. Due to its historical and architectural significance, on October 20th, 2014, Sri Thandayuthapani Temple was designated as the 67th National Monument in Singapore by the National Heritage Board. It is the first National Monument in Singapore to display the National Coat of Arms plaque. Every year during the Thaipusam festival, devotees follow a set route to pay homage and perform various atonement rituals such as head shaving and carrying milk pots on their heads. Some worshippers even use needles to pierce their skin, tongue, and cheeks to demonstrate their devotion and loyalty to their faith.
