Introduction

The Cold Mountain Temple, located in the western outskirts of Suzhou, was first built in the Southern Dynasty over 1400 years ago and belongs to the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. It gained fame from the poem "Night Mooring by Maple Bridge" by Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji, which mentions "the Cold Mountain Temple outside the city of Gusu, its midnight bell tolling for passing boats." The ancient temple contains a large number of cultural relics, including stone inscriptions of Zhang Ji's poetry, stone sculptures of Hanshan and Shide, and fragments of calligraphy by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin. In addition, the Cold Mountain Temple is also a famous place for praying for blessings. Every year on December 31st, the temple holds a New Year's Eve bell-ringing ceremony, ringing the bell 108 times, which is highly favored by tourists.
