Wstęp

Pałac Topkapı był dawnym pałacem położona w miejscu where the Bosporus Strait, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara meet. For nearly four centuries, almost all the sultans lived here and governed the country. Today, the palace has become a major local tourist attraction. Apart from being the main residence of the court, the Topkapı Palace was also the seat of government. Access to the palace was strictly restricted, and the people inside were afraid to leave the palace rashly. The strict court ceremonies were the code of daily life in the palace, ensuring that it was not affected by the outside world. One of the important principles was not to talk in the inner courtyard. This principle probably came from the Byzantine court. The Topkapı Palace also demonstrated this principle through its architectural style and the layout of the halls. The architects had to ensure that the sultan and his family enjoyed maximum privacy and freedom of movement in the palace, so they achieved this by using latticed windows and building secret passages. There were also various artists and craftsmen in the palace, collectively known as the İl-i Hâref (the group of talents), who created many excellent works for the entire empire.
