Introduction
Menara Gardens is a botanical garden covering over 100 hectares, located in the northwest of Marrakech near the Atlas Mountains. The garden was created by the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min in the 12th century and is filled with palm trees, olive trees, and fruit trees. In the 16th century, the Saadian dynasty further expanded the gardens. The gardens are famous for their pyramid-shaped pavilions with green tiles known as "lighthouses," although they are not actual lighthouses but rather occasional residences for the sultan and his family. However, any similar tall structure may be referred to as a menara or lighthouse. In 1869, the gardens were restored by the Alawi Sultan Abderrahmane, who would stay here during the summer.
In the center of the gardens is a pavilion where a sultan once resided, as well as a large artificial lake surrounded by plantations. The lake is approximately 150 meters long and 200 meters wide and is home to many carp. The water for the lake is sourced from mountain springs located about 30 kilometers away from Marrakech through a complex network of underground channels, which is used to irrigate this vast botanical garden.
