Introduction

On April 14, 1521, Magellan arrived in Cebu and erected a cross on the beach, signifying the colonization of these islands by the Spanish king. Today, the cross is housed in a hexagonal pavilion in the Plaza Sugbo. To protect this historically significant symbol, an empty cross made of Philippine mahogany was built to cover the original cross.
