Guangxiao Temple is an ancient and grand temple located in the Lingnan region. The temple has a long history and is one of the four major Buddhist temples in Guangzhou (Guangxiao Temple, Liurong Temple, Hualin Temple, and Haizhuang Temple). It has a history of over 1700 years and was initially built during the Three Kingdoms period. It has undergone several name changes and was finally named Guangxiao Temple in the 21st year of the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1151). The eminent monk Huineng received ordination in front of the temple in the first year of the Yifeng period of the Tang Dynasty (676), thus creating the Southern Zen Buddhism and being honored as the "sixth ancestor of Chan Buddhism," adding eternal glory to Guangxiao Temple. The architecture of Guangxiao Temple is magnificent, and it is rich in cultural relics and historical sites, including the Dasheng Palace from the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Xibo Spring carved by Bodhidharma during the Southern Dynasty, the Shuofa Pei from the Tang Dynasty, the stone pagoda, the Thousand Buddha Iron Pagoda from the Southern Han Dynasty, the Sixth Ancestor Hall, the Sleeping Buddha Hall from the Song and Ming Dynasties, as well as precious stone inscriptions, Buddha statues, bodhi trees, and peepal trees, which are all Buddhist relics and cultural relics.
