Introduction

Wat Pa Pao is a prominent Burmese-style temple built by Shan people. These Shan people came to Chiang Mai in 1883 for timber trade with the British and wanted their own place of worship, hence the temple was constructed. The temple surrounds a sunken courtyard and includes a brick and cement stupa, as well as a recently built monastery. The roof of the Shan temple is designed in the "pyatthat" form, with multiple tiers and a pointed peak. There are three Buddha statues enshrined inside the temple.
