Introduction

The Monastery of Santa Catalina, located in the center of Arequipa, was founded in the 16th century by a wealthy widow who selected nuns from wealthy families in Spain. The nuns lived in a hedonistic manner in the monastery for three centuries. The monastery was built with volcanic rock formed during the eruption of the nearby Misti volcano, occupying an entire street with majestic walls. This is a monastery that combines history and art.
