Introduction

In 1982, the National Gallery of Australia officially opened in Canberra. The gallery is located in a garden-style area that includes the Australian Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Library, the War Memorial, the Australian Documentation Centre, and the Australian Museum. These buildings extensively collect precious artworks from Australia (including indigenous people and islanders from the Torres Strait region), Asia, America, and Europe. To this day, the National Gallery of Australia is dedicated to displaying and academically researching Australian and international art collections.
