Introduction

La Perouse in Botany Bay is named after a French navigator. In 1788, Count La Perouse was invited by the King of France for an exploration of the area. The military lookout tower was built in 1820 with guards to prevent smuggling. The French Monument was completed in 1825. Bare Island was completed in 1885 and connected to the mainland with a wooden bridge and heavy guns. It became the oldest military outpost and customs office. In 1963, Bare Island became a New South Wales park and wildlife sanctuary. The La Perouse Museum displays over 2,000 French navigator maps, instruments, and artifacts. It is also one of the best diving spots in New South Wales and a popular location for wedding photography. The surrounding coral reefs, beaches, grasslands, seagulls, trees, rocks, sea water, wooden bridges, lookout towers, monuments, and museums create a stunning visual spectacle. La Perouse is now the core landscape of Botany Bay National Park and attracts many locals to sunbathe in spring and summer. The movie "Mission Impossible 2" filmed scenes here in 2000.
