Introduction

Established in 1832, this university art museum is one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The original collection was donated by American artist John Trumbull and consisted of over 100 paintings depicting the American Revolutionary War. After several expansions, the current building was designed in the 1950s by Yale University architecture professor Louis Kahn. The art museum focuses on early Italian paintings, African sculptures, and modern art.
