Introduction

Massachusetts State House is the location of the state government and the legislature, located at the top of Beacon Hill in Boston. This building occupies 6.7 acres of land and the land was originally owned by the state's first governor, John Hancock. Before the current State House was built in 1798, the state government was located in the Old State House on Court Street.
