Introduction

The Cathedral of Saint Agatha is one of the most famous cultural heritages in Catania. The Baroque style building cleverly combines black volcanic rock and white limestone, giving the exterior a magnificent appearance. The front of the building is also carved with a half-body statue of Saint Agatha. Built in the 11th century, the cathedral has undergone several earthquakes and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Saint Agatha is the patron saint of Catania, and her feast day on February 5th is the city's most important celebration, as well as the third-largest Christian festival in the world. The center of the Cathedral Square is the famous Elephant Fountain, the city's most famous monument and representative symbol. It is said that the obelisk has the power to control Mount Etna.
