Introduction

The Cathedral of San Gimignano is one of the typical representatives of the Romanesque architecture in northern Italy, and was built in the 10th century. However, in the earthquake of 1117, the cathedral was damaged badly. After 20 years of restoration and expansion, the cathedral gradually formed its current appearance. In the 14th century, the roof and apse were reconstructed, and Gothic elements were added. The facade of the cathedral is composed of alternating layers of tuff and brick, with bright and warm colors. The pair of narrow double arches at the main entrance presents a unique style, while the rose window above in the shape of the "Wheel of Fortune" symbolizes the capriciousness of nature and fate. This cathedral is one of the early representatives of the fusion of Romanesque architecture and Gothic elements.
