Introduction

The Saint George of Mazzorbo Church is a church located on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy, designed by the renowned Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. The facade of the church was completed by Vicenzo Scamozzi in 1610, and originally built as the Saint George Church in the 8th to 9th century. It was later donated to a Benedictine monk and relocated to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in 982. Construction of the church began in 1566 but was not completed until Palladio's death in 1580. It is considered one of the best examples of Palladian architecture and one of his most outstanding works. The 75-meter-high bell tower next to the church began construction in 1467 but collapsed in 1774 and was later rebuilt in 1791. Today, Benedictine monks still work in the church. Due to its location facing the San Marco area, the entire church can be clearly seen from St Mark's Square.
