Introduction

The Echmiadzin Cathedral is the mother church of the Armenian Church. It was originally called the Cathedral of Holy Mother and was built during the time of Saint Gregory in the 4th century. It is said that the cathedral was built on the site where he witnessed a miracle. In the 6th century, the Persians destroyed the mother church and built a Zoroastrian temple on the site. It wasn't until the 16th century, after the Safavid dynasty of Persia ruled the eastern Armenian plateau, that Echmiadzin became the center of the Armenian Church and the residence of the head of the church, the Catholicos.
