Introduction
The name of Geghard Monastery comes from the legend of the "Holy Spear", which is believed to be a weapon used by a Roman soldier to pierce the body of Jesus. The monastery has a very ancient history, and its original purpose was to preserve a portion of the "Holy Spear". The current buildings of the monastery date back to the 13th century and were built by the Armenian noble families of Zakarian and Proshian. Transportation The Geghard Monastery is more remote than the Garni Temple, and is usually visited on a day trip from Yerevan, along with other attractions like the Garni Temple.
