Introduction

The literal meaning of Khor Virap is "deep pit", and it is named so because it once served as a prison for Saint Gregory the Illuminator, who converted Armenian King Tiridates III to Christianity. Saint Gregory was imprisoned here for 13 years before he was granted legal status, and it is said that the pit was infested with poisonous creatures. However, he miraculously survived with the help of a woman. Today, Khor Virap has become one of Armenia's important pilgrimage sites with several churches and altars built here, including one inside the deep pit.
