Introduction

This bridge is located on the Danube River, connecting the southeastern part of Pest and Budapest city center. Its two ends are Gellért Square, which has the Gellért Baths and hotel, and Fővám Square, near the nearby Budapest Economics University and Market Hall. The bridge was built from 1894 to 1896, using the most beautiful imitation chain bridge design at that time, with a length of 333.6 meters and a width of 20.1 meters. There are four Turul bronze statues on the top of the bridge pillars, representing the falcon in ancient Hungarian mythology. Emperor Franz Joseph I attended the opening ceremony and personally installed the last silver rivet. Since then, this bridge was initially named after the emperor.
