Introduction

After descending from Castle Hill on the Sikló cable car, you can reach Budapest's iconic building - the Chain Bridge. The bridge was built by Hungarian Count István Széchenyi to attend his father's funeral in 1820, when bad weather prevented the use of a wooden floating bridge. British bridge designer William Tierney Clark was invited to design this beautiful Chain Bridge. In 1850, Hungarian designer János Marschalkó created the lion statues on both sides of the bridge, with their claws gripping objects to symbolize the close connection between Buda and Pest. The roadway of the Chain Bridge is located in the center of the bridge, with pedestrian walkways on both sides. Walking across the Chain Bridge leads to Széchenyi István Square on the Pest side and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
