Introduction

The Kapnikarea Church is one of the oldest Eastern Orthodox churches in Athens, built in the 11th century and constructed on the basis of an ancient Greek temple. The origin of the church's name is still uncertain, but most people believe it comes from "Kapnikon", an ancient Byzantine tax.
