Introduction

Located at the southernmost point of the Attica Peninsula in southeastern Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands atop a cliff. It is about 70 kilometers from Athens and boasts stunning views of ships on the sea. Especially at sunset, the scenery here is breathtaking. According to legend, the Aegean Sea is also closely related to the story here. It is said that a king named Aegeus established a sign after his son Theseus was sent to Crete to kill a monster. If Theseus returned safely, the sailboat would be changed to white; if he died, it would be changed to black. However, Theseus forgot the agreement, causing King Aegeus to be heartbroken when he saw the black sailboat and eventually jumped into the sea and committed suicide. To honor him, this sea was named the Aegean Sea.

There is a bus from Pedion Areos Park terminal that goes to Sounion. The departure times vary depending on the season, with buses departing every 30 minutes to one hour. The ticket costs around 6 euros and can be purchased on the bus. On Filellinon road in Syntagma Square, there is also a station near the church (opposite the church, next to a car wash) where a shuttle to Sounion is available. The journey takes about 2 hours. There are two bus routes to Sounion, one along the coast and one that is not. It is important to confirm which route the bus will take before departing. The round-trip ticket costs 12.5 euros.
