Introduction

This church, built in the late 15th century, is decorated with thousands of skulls and bones of people, making it one of the most attractive attractions in Evora today. The Gothic and Manueline-style church was famous in the early 16th century. To better use urban land, bones from 42 monasteries in Evora were collected and placed here as decorative materials on walls, ceilings, columns, and windowsills. About 5,000 skeletons are arranged in various shapes, displaying the monks' thoughts on death and human existence.
