Introduction

Porto has many beautiful bridges, among which the most notable is the Dom Luís I iron bridge. Designed by the apprentice of famous designer Eiffel, Teófilo Seyrig, this double-decker iron bridge connects Gaia and Porto's old town. It is over 70 meters high, 395 meters in span, and 8 meters wide. The upper layer of the bridge is for the metro line D, and the lower layer is for vehicle traffic. It is one of the largest iron bridges in terms of span. Overlooking the beautiful scenery on both sides from the bridge is a wonderful experience, but if you have a fear of heights, you need to be careful. Taking a boat ride on the Douro River is one of the best ways to appreciate all of Porto's bridges. Another famous iron bridge is the Dona Maria Pia bridge, named after the wife of Dom Luís I, and was designed by Eiffel before he designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The bridge was completed in 1876 and was used until 1991. Today it is a national monument.
