Introduction

Alfama is located in the oldest district of Lisbon and was once the most prosperous place during the Moorish rule. The church was originally a mosque, which was ordered to be converted into the oldest church in Lisbon by Portugal's King Dom Afonso in 1147. Despite multiple earthquakes, the church has not been destroyed but instead has been continuously repaired and rebuilt. If you observe carefully, you will be surprised to find that this church integrates different architectural styles, such as Romanesque architecture with Gothic rose windows and Baroque doors, which is amazing. The surrounding archaeological excavations have been ongoing for a long time, and Moorish and earlier artifacts are constantly being unearthed, making it very interesting.
