Introduction

The One Minute House is located next to the Old Town Hall in Prague, and was the residence of Kafka's family from 1889 to 1896, where his three sisters were also born. Although the origin of its name is unknown, the graffiti on its walls, made around 1615, depict stories from the Bible and classical mythology. Despite being monochrome, the variations in light and dark make the figures come to life. There is also a lion statue in the corner called the White Lion, added by a pharmacist who moved into the building in 1712. After operating as the White Lion Pharmacy for 130 years, it closed and the owner became a tobacco merchant before Kafka's family moved in.
