Introduction

Jan Hus was a famous Czech religious reformer and patriot, and also the first rector of Charles University in Prague. In the center of Old Town Square, there is a huge group sculpture built in honor of this great figure. Jan Hus once simplified the grammar of Czech language and advocated for universities to use Czech as the language of instruction, opposing corrupt practices such as Germanization, church authority, hierarchical education, and the sale of indulgences. However, his ideas conflicted with the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, and he was burned at the stake on July 6th, 1415 by the Roman Pope's religious court in Constance, Switzerland. The group sculpture was sculpted over 13 years from 1902 to 1915 and was unveiled on July 6th, 1915, the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus's execution.
