Introduction

The Small Town Bridge Towers are a pair of historic towers on the Vltava riverbank in the area of the small town of Čertovka, which lead to Charles Bridge. The smaller of the two towers is the ancient Judith Tower, which is considered to be part of Judith Bridge, a Romanesque-style building from the 12th century. However, three quarters of Judith Bridge were destroyed in the Great Flood of 1342, and Emperor Charles IV rebuilt a new stone bridge in 1357, which became Charles Bridge, leaving Judith Tower as the only surviving part of the old bridge. The second tower is a Gothic-style building that was completed during the reign of King George of Poděbrady. The towers were modernized between 1879 and 1883 by architect Josef Mocker, who inherited the architectural style of the old Small Town Bridge Towers. The Small Town Bridge Towers house a permanent exhibition about the history of Charles Bridge.
