Introduction

The Municipal House is located on Republic Square in Prague and is an important building in the political and architectural history of the Czech Republic. This Art Nouveau-style building is a manifestation of Czech nationalism and was decorated by top Czech artists. Above the main entrance is a huge ceramic semi-circular mosaic called "Homage to Prague" by Karel Špillar. On either side are fable sculptures by Ladislav Šaloun, while the decoration work was completed by Joseph Mařatka and others. The interior also features murals by well-known artists such as Alfons Mucha and Max Švabinský, all of which have a nationalistic theme. The Smetana Music Hall, named after Bedřich Smetana, is the main venue for concerts held in the Municipal House. On October 28, 1918, the Smetana Music Hall became the place where Czechoslovakia declared independence.
