Introduction

Next to the Plein square in the city center of The Hague stands a building with a long history - the Binnenhof, the Dutch parliament building. Built in the 13th century, the castle was originally the residence of Count Floris IV of Holland and later became the Dutch parliament building. Since 1446, the parliament has held meetings here and over the centuries, the Binnenhof has become the center of Dutch politics. The land where the Binnenhof is located was purchased by Count Floris IV in 1229. He built his own residence near the Hofvijver lake. Over time, more buildings were constructed around the courtyard, such as the Knight's Hall (Ridderzaal), where the Queen's annual throne speech is held. The building also has many tower buildings called "het Torentje," one of which is the small tower next to Maurits' residence, which has been the office of the Dutch Prime Minister since 1982.
