Introduction

The architecture of the monastery is not outstanding, but it is located at a corner of the Tskhaltsitela ("Red Water") River Gorge, offering stunning views. The monastery was built to commemorate the Georgian Duke brothers who died for their faith in the 8th century, and it is said that the name of the "Red Water" river comes from a massacre that Arab people launched in the area. According to legend, the bodies of the brothers were washed to the corner by the river, and a lion helped to carry them to this place for burial. It is said that if one crawls around the altar where they are buried three times and makes a wish, the wish will come true.
