Introduction
Carcassonne City: Breathtaking.
The city walls of Carcassonne were already taking shape in the 4th century, and its magnificent buildings still remain within two-thirds of the present inner walls.
The Carcassonne Castle, located on the west side of the town, is a spectacular structure and is considered an early fortified city. Built by the Trencavel family in the 12th century, the castle was expanded and surrounded by walls in the following century.
During the Crusade against the Albigensians, Simon de Montfort captured Carcassonne. Afterwards, the city came under the king's jurisdiction. Throughout the 13th century, construction projects were carried out in the city: an outer wall was built, and the inner wall was renovated. Carcassonne became an important defensive stronghold on the French-Aragon border and an impregnable fortress.
This complex consists of 52 towers and 3 kilometers of walls. It is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and has undergone restoration work in recent years.
