Introduction

The Saint Sernin Church was built between 1080 and 1120 AD and is a Romanesque brick church. Due to the lack of stone in the surrounding area, only a small part of the church used stone. The church was built on the foundation of an early basilica, which was built in the 4th century and was the first church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Toulouse, originally built around 250 AD. The Saint Sernin Church, built in 250 AD for the first Archbishop of Toulouse, Saint Saturnin, is one of the important pilgrimage centers in medieval Europe. It is one of the largest surviving Romanesque churches in Europe and was classified as a historical monument in 1842 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
