Introduction

The Saint-Bénézet Bridge, also known as the Broken Bridge, is a famous medieval bridge. It was originally built between 1171 and 1185, spanning the Rhône River and connecting Avignon with the Avignon new town on the left bank. The bridge was originally about 900 meters long but due to frequent flooding and increasing danger, most of it was destroyed and no longer in use after a major flood in 1668. Some of the bridge arches survived, but they have since collapsed or been dismantled. Today, only four arches remain, forming the current "Broken Bridge". There is an exhibition on "Bridge History" at the entrance of the bridge, showcasing bridges listed as World Heritage Sites. In addition, there is an exhibition on the 3D reconstruction of the Broken Bridge. Despite being nonfunctional, the Broken Bridge still attracts many visitors as a historical monument.
