Introduction

The core of this church is the octagonal chapel, built in 805 AD, with a distinctive Byzantine style. After renovation in 2003, the chapel's mosaics and marble were revealed, appearing especially bright and beautiful. This church was commissioned by Charlemagne, and for several centuries, from 936 to 1531, a total of 30 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned here. In the center of the church hangs a bronze chandelier, a gift from King Barbarossa in 1165. Charlemagne himself is buried in a golden shrine behind the altar.
