Introduction
On December 4, 1948, the Free University of Berlin was founded in Berlin-Dahlem. During the Cold War, some teachers and students of the original Berlin University were assigned to East Berlin, and the Free University of Berlin was established in West Berlin. Today, the university has 43,500 students, including 5,000 foreign students, making it one of the largest comprehensive universities in Germany. In January 2006, the German Research Association and Science Committee announced the candidate list for Germany's elite universities, with the Free University of Berlin among them. On October 19, 2007, the final round of the "Elite University" selection in Germany was announced, and the Free University of Berlin officially became one of the nine elite universities in Germany.
